SpaceX Falcon 9 ESA HERA Misson to Asteroid Dimorphos
Launched: 10:52 AM EDT
Launch site: Space Launch Complex (SLC) 40, Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Booster: 23rd Flight. No landing, no grid fins, Final flight, booster expended (no re-use)
Payload: ESA's HERA spacecraft
HERA is a mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) whose goal is to validate if impact can be used to deflect an asteroid on a collision course with the Earth.
This satellite will study the results from by NASA's DART impactor spacecraft, which purposely crashed into the Dimorphos asteroid in September 2022. It will measure size and morphology of the impact site.
